Check all documentation first. If paperwork is missing, make your excuses and leave: the seller is incompetent, dishonest - or both.
INSIDER TIPS:
- The DVLA form V5 (registration document) is the car's passport. Check it against the seller's ID and the car's registration index (number plate) and VIN (thin metal plate under the bonnet and on the door sill on the driver's side - may be under carpet). If the V5 looks dodgy (blurred, wrong colour, no watermark - possible forgery) call the DVLA helpline on 0870 185 85 85.
- Is the service record book up to date? Are any stamps missing? Call the dealer who issued the last stamp if you have doubts.
- Is the date on the MoT certificate close to the anniversary of the date of first registration shown on the V5? If not, ask why not.
- How does the mileage on the car's MoT certificate compare with the current mileometer reading?
