The original Freelander is a practical alternative to a family estate car. Its smart looks, status and civilised manners are appealing but it's quite pricey to run.

"The Freelander was unresponsive, especially when loaded, and tended to roll around corners. There is a good amount of space but the side-opening tailgate is a pain. Build quality is poor and gadgetry unfulfilling."
